Some top-notch table setting skills have earned Manurewa High School student Lydia Tekori a scholarship to study at Ignite Colleges.
The talented Year 12 student achieved the highest score in the Classic Table Setting event at the recent NZ Hospitality Championships. Not only did Lydia gain a gold medal and Best in Show, but she also won herself a full scholarship to study the Level 3 New Zealand Certificate in Hospitality (Café, Bar and Barista Skills) at Ignite after she graduates from high school.
“I am over the moon,” said Lydia. “I did my best and gave it my all, but I was not expecting to win gold overall, and winning the scholarship to study at Ignite was a big surprise. I’m looking forward to taking it up in 2019.”
Head of Hospitality & Catering at Manurewa High School Daisy Chandra said Lydia was a fantastic student with a promising career ahead of her.
“Lydia is very committed, she listens and learns from her mistakes, and she is very focussed on practice, practice, practice,” she said. “She also presents herself very well, which is important in front-of-house, and I know that she is looking at pursuing a career in the hospitality industry.”
That passion for hospitality runs in the family. Last year Lydia’s older sister also won a gold medal at the national champs, and is now studying hospitality at tertiary level.
This is the first time Ignite has awarded a hospitality scholarship, and the Colleges’ General Manager Jasbir Kaur said the provider was delighted to be able to provide someone with talent and passion a stepping stone into the industry.
“We want to encourage students to pursue careers in the hospitality industry. It’s an exciting, vibrant sector to work in, and there are a lot of diverse employment opportunities,” Jasbir said.
